Wenn Schmelzwasser durch Spalten in die Oberfl\u00e4che eines Gletschers eindringt, beginnt ein spektakul\u00e4rer Prozess. Das Wasser, oft beladen mit Sand und Steinen , frisst sich wie ein Bohrer in die Tiefe und schafft Gletscherm\u00fchlen: senkrechte Sch\u00e4chte, die bis zu 20 Meter Durchmesser und mehrere hundert Meter Tiefe erreichen k\u00f6nnen. Die rotierende Bewegung des Wassers erzeugt spiralf\u00f6rmige und verschlungene Hohlr\u00e4ume, die das Eis von innen heraus formen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sie beschleunigen den Abfluss des Schmelzwassers und beeinflussen, wie schnell sich der Gletscher \u00fcber sein Felsbett bewegt. Stauen sich gro\u00dfe Wassermengen in den Gletscherm\u00fchlen, steigt der Druck in den Reservoiren an der Basis stark an. Bricht ein solcher Speicher auf, entstr\u00f6mt das Wasser unter hohem Druck \u2013 bei einer 100 m hohen Wassers\u00e4ule entspricht das 10 bar \u2013 und mit hoher Geschwindigkeit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trifft das Wasser schlie\u00dflich auf den Fels, entstehen Gletschert\u00f6pfe<\/i><\/b>: zylindrische oder sch\u00fcsself\u00f6rmige Vertiefungen, die durch Wirbelstr\u00f6mungen im Schmelzwasser geformt werden. In diesen Strudeln k\u00f6nnen Flie\u00dfgeschwindigkeiten von bis zu 200 km\/h erreicht werden , wobei Sand und Ger\u00f6ll die Gesteinsoberfl\u00e4che aush\u00f6hlen. Solche Formen sind meist mehrere Zentimeter bis Meter gro\u00df und stammen h\u00e4ufig aus der letzten Eiszeit.<\/span><\/h3>\n
